RIVERDALE -- The Police Department is modernizing school lockdown procedures should an active-shooter incident occur, and they're a major change from past protocols.

Borough police Lt. James MacIntosh attended Wednesday's Board of Education meeting to outline the plan the department will present teachers and school administrators during the 2016-17 academic year.

MacIntosh said the current lockdown procedure, in which teachers and students lock themselves in a classroom, has been determined to be unsafe. The best thing for everyone to do in an active shooter situation is to leave if they can, he said.

He estimated that it takes the police seven minutes to arrive at a scene, and within that time, many people could get hurt, especially if they are sitting targets. …
