Closter Mandarin Program Getting Teacher from China

CLOSTER -- Tenakill Middle School will play host to an exchange teacher from China to instruct in a Mandarin program in the fall, with funding support by a federal grant.

The school is one of 23 selected from 200 applicants nationwide to the Teachers of Critical Languages Program.

"A couple years ago, our superintendent started investigating having more options in our middle school [because] we only have Spanish as a language," said Courtney Carmichael, supervisor of curriculum and instruction. She said the Northern Valley Regional High School District offers many more languages, and that prompted the application for another language program at Tenakill.

"So we came across this application in January and, honestly, we didn't think we would get it," Carmichael said, adding that the award came as a surprise. …
