PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK ; WAIT 'TIL THE MIDNIGHT HOUR; Hurricane, St. Albans Planning Late- Night Workouts to Kick off Season

Article excerpt

As July turns to August late Sunday, two Kanawha Valley teams will hit the field for midnight practices to open the high school football season. Hurricane and St. Albans are the only two schools in Kanawha and Putnam counties planning late-night/early-morning workouts to coincide with the first day of preseason drills across West Virginia on Aug. 1.

Buchanan said he's been offered so far by Toledo, Central Florida, Appalachian State and Villanova.

He's one of the team's top tacklers and caught a touchdown pass last year against Chapmanville. Buchanan runs the 40-yard dash in 4.86 seconds.

Spring Valley coach Brad Dingess may have a decision on his hands at quarterback, as returning starter Derek Johnson, a junior, is being pushed by senior left-hander Kane Morrone.

Morrone (6-1, 185) has put on more than 20 pounds in the offseason, Dingess said, and gotten a lot stronger. …
