Grab your partner and half-step your way down to the band shell at Third Ward Veterans Memorial Park in Passaic on Thursday night, when polka king Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra appear for their annual free concert.

Sturr has won 18 Grammy awards, which makes him the undisputed king of the swinging, brass and accordion-drive dance music known as polka. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

This is the 13th consecutive year that Sturr has played Passaic, as part of the city's Sounds of Summer concert series. Third Ward park is at the intersection of Passaic and Van Houten avenues. A big crowd is expected so plan to arrive early to find parking.

The music has its roots in 19th century Bohemia, but spread all over Europe combining different styles and instruments. Different strains of polka can be heard in Ukraine, Slovenia, Russia, Poland, Austria, France, Ireland and even across the Atlantic Ocean, in South American countries such as Peru. …
