Crumbling Town Hall to Get Pounds 330m Overhaul ; 140-Year-Old Building Is Showing Its Age and Badly Needs Repair Work

OUTLINE plans for a Pounds 330m overhaul of Manchester town hall have been approved as bosses set about saving the crumbling 140- year-old building.

Council chiefs have signed off on the first stages of the radical salvage project, with much of the city centre masterpiece in dire need of repair.

Developing office part of a 'refurbishment the Time has taken its toll on Alfred Waterhouse's towering, Munich-inspired town hall, with work needed to modernise its electrics, heating, wheelchair access, toilets, lifts and fire escape routes.

Bosses estimate 40 per cent of the building is in need of 'immediate' repair or improvement - and say that could rise to 85 per cent in five years if nothing is done.

The council's executive gave the first outline plan for refurbishment the green light on Wednesday - and agreed to put a design and project team in place to beef up the proposals. …
