Donald Trump, in his speech accepting the Republican Party's nomination for president of the United States, painted a gloomy picture of America. Violence and unlawfulness were rampant, he said. Illegal immigrants and terrorism threatened our very existence as a country, he said.

The other day on my lunch break, I went to the square at PPG Place, and in one hour I saw so much to disprove Mr. Trump's dystopian vision. I saw a woman in a hijab watch her son play in the fountain there. I saw white folks and black folks walking together, laughing and enjoying the sunshine. I saw police conversing with citizens. I saw people living their lives in a free, safe country.

The recent spate of violence in our country is troubling, but it is not our entire story. …
