Head of Veterans Commission Placed on Paid Leave after Sexual Harrassment Verdict

JEFFERSON CITY * Missouri Veterans Commission Director Larry Kay has been placed on paid administrative leave after a former employee won a discrimination lawsuit against him last week.

The move follows an emergency closed-door meeting of the commission on Monday, after which members said they were consulting with attorneys before making any permanent decisions.

Jurors awarded Pat Rowe Kerr, the commission's former outreach director, nearly $3 million in damages. She testified that Kay fired her in 2009, when she was 56, because he had a problem with older, successful women.

Kay attributed her dismissal to budget cuts.

Deputy Director Bryan Hunt will serve as acting director until further notice.

Kerr alleged in her complaint that Hunt showed discrimination of his own, saying he made comments about "trying to weed out older employees. …
