A Fort Lee man was charged Friday with offenses related to the theft of more than $500,000 from a woman who gave him power of attorney, leaving her without enough funds to continue paying for care in a senior living facility.

Benjamin K. Yew, 33, transferred money from the woman's account to his own bank account over seven years and used it for "personal purposes," Bergen County's acting prosecutor, Gurbir S. Grewal, said in a release.

Yew was given power of attorney to assist in handling the woman's financial and health care affairs in 2009, when the woman's investment account contained more than $900,000, Grewal said.

He did not identify the woman or specify her relationship with Yew, a pre-school teacher who was arrested Friday at his home.

Grewal said the woman's accounts were "depleted" until her funds were "insufficient to maintain the level of care the victim received" at a "senior living facility. …
