Eight-Year Ban for Ex-Wigan Ace

A PROMISING former Wigan Warriors academy player has been banned from all sport for eight years after committing a second doping offence.

Rhys Pugsley was first banned in April 2014 when he tested positive for anabolic steroids while at Wigan. The prop - who was capped by Wales on the day of his 18th birthday - was handed a two- year suspension and released by the Warriors.

It looked as though the young star had been handed a second chance in rugby league when he agreed a deal to join Kingstone Press Championship side Whitehaven at the conclusion of his initial ban, but a test conducted by UK Anti-Doping in February again found traces of nandrolone.

As a result, Pugsley has now been banned from taking part in any sport until 2024.

In a statement, UKAD chief executive Nicole Sapstead said: "Rhys has single-handedly destroyed that promising career as a result of this second violation. …
