CITY could be signing one of the best defenders in the world if they land John Stones.

That's the view of Rochdale boss Keith Hill, who helped develop the young defender at Barnsley.

The Everton centre-back is City's No.1 target at the back, with Aymeric Laporte having opted to stay at Athletic Bilbao earlier in the summer.

But a fee for Stones is yet to be agreed, with one club determined not to meet the Pounds 50m valuation and the other keen to hold out for it given the money paid out from Manchester for Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne last summer.

Despite the criticism the player attracted last season, Hill remains convinced of his quality.

"I do believe he'll be one of the best central defenders in the world over the next five years," he said. …
