Judge Denies Lower Bail for Teacher

A judge on Monday declined to lower bail for a high school math teacher who is charged with sexually assaulting a former student at his home more than a decade ago.

Gary J. Minervini, 37, of East Rutherford was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault of a person whom he supervised and second-degree sexual assault of a person who was 16 to 18 years old. The first-degree charge carries a sentence range of 10 to 20 years in prison and the second degree charge has a range of 5 to 10 years.

The alleged assaults occurred in the summers of 2004 and 2005 when Minervini was a teacher at Bergen County Technical High School, according to statements made by his attorney, Jane Personette.

Minervini and the alleged victim were involved in a long-term relationship and lived together in Lodi for at least the last three years. …
