School's Athletic Trainer Replaced

LITTLE FALLS -- The Passaic Valley High School Board of Education has replaced the full-time athletic trainer with the former part- time assistant athletic trainer.

During the action last Tuesday, board members would not comment on why the former athletic trainer, Rich Garcia, was replaced by Anthony Olivieri, the former part-time assistant athletic trainer, whose position had been eliminated in May after he had been hired in January.

"We did not renew Mr. Garcia's contract," said schools Superintendent JoAnn Cardillo, who declined to further comment.

Olivieri was hired as a 10-month employee for the 2016-17 school year beginning Aug. 15 through June 15, 2017.

Garcia had previously commended the addition of the part-time position by the board and said it was making an impact on the athletic training program. He gave a presentation to trustees last November detailing the high school's athletic training program, stating that there was one full-time athletic trainer currently overseeing 21 sports and three additional athletic activities, totaling 479 participants and arguing that extra staffing was needed. …
