1891 At Trouville on the Sea

Trouville-Sur-Mer Everyone here says that Trouville thus far is having its worst season in years as regards the weather. The rain goes away and comes again until visitors are quite discouraged. Bathing is not agreeable with a northeast wind and a dun sky. Even the Regatta failed to bring a crowd. But Trouville has other delights than bathing and dancing -- the magnificent drives along well-kept roads, with the distant views of the sea, and the ungainly attempts of a few courageous bathers to take a dip in spite of the inclement weather. Today, however, sunshine is breaking through the clouds, and the smooth, hard beach is filled with youngsters with spade and shovel, while older ones are promenading the boarded walk, listening to the strains of Chopin, Strauss, Rossini and Thomas by the Casino orchestra. …
