Help Celebrate Pool's Big Birthday with Right Feast

MANCHESTER'S magnificent Victoria Baths turns 110 this year and it's hosting a birthday feast to celebrate.

Former Aumbry chef-proprietor Mary-Ellen McTague will be cooking up a special dinner using only food that would otherwise go to waste in her recently-appointed role as head chef of Real Junk Food Manchester.

The family-style meal will be served in the males' second class hall after pre-dinner drinks and music in the Turkish baths rest room and gala pool, which will be filled with water again especially for the anniversary celebrations.

The event will help to raise money toward the next phase of work on the Grade II*-listed building: the Pounds 3.5m restoration and eventual reopening of the Turkish baths.

All the original tiling, marble slabs, steam room and ceramic ceilings are to be preserved so visitors can once again enjoy the authentic experience, as conceived by the building's architect Henry Price when it first opened in 1906.

"You can help us reach our target by simply eating, drinking and being merry with friends," a spokeswoman for the baths said. …
