Sluggish Jets Not in Form

Article excerpt

FLORHAM PARK -- The football bounced to Brandon Marshall after yet another dropped pass in practice, this one by running back Dominique Williams. The Jets wide receiver grabbed it and punted it over the temporary stands filled with visiting campers and their counselors.

It was the most visible moment of frustration Tuesday in what coach Todd Bowles termed a "sluggish" outing for the offense and defense on Day 5 of training camp, the second with pads.

"It was probably a combination of things," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said when asked if Monday's day off factored in the lackluster performance. "It's just important for us to remember we can't waste any days. We did some good things today, but we did more bad than good. We've got to continue to get better each practice. We didn't perform the way we should have today."

Fitzpatrick completed approximately half of his passes during the 11-on-11 session, with several of them underthrown and/or wobbly. There were numerous drops, and he also had another pass knocked down behind the line of scrimmage by linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin.

Fitzpatrick was intercepted once when cornerback Juston Burris cut in front of Marshall on a 20-yard route over the middle.

In a real game, Burris likely would have made it a pick-six.

"I thought [the offense] did a decent job in the move-the-ball period," Bowles said. "I thought the defense came back in the two- minute period. I think both units, overall, were sluggish. It was just like that coming back from a day off. We've got to find ways to start faster."

Fitzpatrick, of course, missed all of the team's off-season activities and minicamp before signing a one-year, $12 million deal on the eve of the first practice, so it's natural for there to be some rust this early in training camp.

Still, the first preseason game Aug. 11 against the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium is rapidly approaching. …
