ZIKA ADVISORY

SARASOTA COUNTY -- Local tourism officials are not expecting a big impact from what might be one of the smallest travel advisories in history.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel advisory for a one-square-mile area of northern Miami where health officials believe transmissions of the Zika virus are occurring.

A warning that specific -- and more than 200 miles away from Southwest Florida -- should not thwart travelers heading to this region, said Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County, the county's tourism promoting agency.

The advisory encourages women who are pregnant

or thinking of becoming pregnant to avoid unnecessary travel to the impacted area, just north of downtown Miami.

But it's small enough and specific enough that it shouldn't plague the whole state with fears of Zika, Haley said.

"It's important guidance that health officials need to give and we applaud that," Haley said. …
