Mahwah Postal Worker Accused of Stealing Gift Cards

MAHWAH - A mail carrier stole gift cards from people on her route and spent them while still in uniform, police said Wednesday.

Police said Jaleesa S. Smith, 27, of Orange admitted to the thefts, which she allegedly carried out by feeling envelopes and looking at the labeling to determine if a gift card was inside. She would then use the cards to buy personal items, Police Chief James Batelli said.

The cards were worth a combined $240. Two were from Visa, and the third was from Costco, Batelli said.

Video taken by store surveillance cameras caught Smith using the cards while wearing her postal worker uniform, police said.

Smith started working as a mail carrier in Mahwah last September. During that time, police said they had taken two reports of residents not receiving gift or rebate cards that were supposed to come in the mail. …
