Hackensack Arts Meeting Rescheduled

HACKENSACK -- A special council meeting Thursday morning was abruptly declared null and void after a resident pointed out that the council had not posted notice of the 8 a.m. gathering at least 48 hours in advance, in violation of state law.

The special meeting, held primarily to introduce nearly $2.2 million in funding for renovations to the performing arts center, at first proceeded as planned, with the council unanimously approving four resolutions on the agenda.

But when the council opened the meeting to public comment, city resident and school board attorney Richard Salkin questioned the legitimacy of the meeting itself.

"I will challenge this. This is in direct violation of the Open Public Meetings Act," he said.

The Open Public Meetings Act requires "written advance notice of at least 48 hours," according to state law.

"What time did the notice go out on Tuesday?" Salkin asked.

Clerk Deborah Karlsson said that the notice had gone out to newspapers at 10:57 a. …
