Building-Trade Jobs Stay Highest since Downturn

CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYMENT

Construction employment eased off a recent peak in Southwest Florida in June but remained near its highest level since the end of the Great Recession, at 21,000 workers, according to an analysis of federal data by a national trade organization.

The previous month, the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton market had 21,100 construction workers, the analysis from the Associated General Contractors of America showed.

The June count was up about 4 percent from this time last year.

Charlotte County had 3,700 workers in the building trades in June,

up about 9 percent from this time last year.

The construction workforce in the two counties hit a peak of 32,200 in May 2006 and plunged to 14,900 in 2011.

The only Florida market to show a decline was Ocala, down 2 percent from June 2015. Orlando had the largest gain when compared with June 2016, at 16 percent, followed by Miami-Miami Beach, up 13 percent, Charlotte County and Tampa-St. Petersburg and Jacksonville, both up 7 percent. …
