VENICE COMMUNITY CENTER

VENICE -- A solar power demonstration project that also will provide about 20 shaded parking spaces is under construction at the Venice Community Center.

The structure, being built on the southwest side of the community center parking lot, is a venture between Florida Power & Light and the city of Venice, though FPL is paying for the project with funds collected through an optional $9 per month Solar Now fee.

"This is a showcase of what alternate uses you can do, that have the combined benefit of solar and another purpose," said Kathleen Weeden, the city engineer. "It's a location to generate green energy."

The city agreed last September to lease about 8,000 square feet of the parking lot to FPL for 30 years for $10 a year. The lease starts once construction is complete.

Called a Solar Now Canopy, the structure is the first of its type on the west coast of Florida. …
