The Post-Gazette editorial "Israel's Next Steps: The Netanyahu Government Is Taking Harder Lines," shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the realities and history of the conflict between the Palestinian Arabs and Israel.

Mahmoud Abbas, the so-called "moderate" leader of the Palestinian Authority, PLO and Fatah, just recently announced his intention to sue Britain for issuing the Balfour Declaration a century ago. As Jack Paar might have said, I kid you not. This symbolizes the essence of the conflict, the absolute refusal of the Palestinian Arab leadership to reconcile itself with the existence of that tiny, democratic state of Israel in the sea of authoritarian, dictatorial and repressive Arab and Muslim states in the Middle East.

The editorial gives no mention of the way Mr. Abbas walked away from negotiations nearly a decade ago when he was offered the equivalent of all the disputed territories. For all practical purposes, he has refused to negotiate ever since. …
