Passaic Man Found Guilty of Sex-Related Crimes in 2014

A 31-year-old Passaic man was convicted of first-degree kidnapping and other offenses related to a sexual assault at an abandoned house in Paterson more than two years ago, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said Friday in a news release.

Juan Cruz-Pena held a 35-year-old Paterson resident on the porch at a Van Houten Street house for hours early on May 22, 2014, punching the victim and forcing the person into "repeated acts of sexual contact," Valdes said.

The prosecutor identified the victim only by the initials C.M. and did not specify the victim's gender.

Cruz-Pena was convicted on Thursday by a jury following a trial that began on July 26 before Superior Court Judge Adam E. Jacobs in Paterson Superior Court, Valdes said. The prosecutor said another Passaic man, 33-year-old Daniel Ortiz, also was involved in the incident and will be tried "at a later date. …
