ROSKILDE, Denmark

One of the most extreme examples of mixing young and old in Denmark is the medieval capital of Roskilde, founded in 600. Just a 20-minute ride west of Copenhagen on the "S" train, it is home to the Viking Museum. In addition to artifacts that help explain the history of these feared farmer/warriors, the museum also features a display of five Viking-era ships that were excavated from the city's harbor.

The ships are each of a different variety, and they were scuttled in the fjord 800 years ago to form a blockade against possible attackers coming by sea. The museum features a film showing the extremely difficult process of reclaiming the ships. Much of the digging had to be done by hand, and water had to be displaced in each individual cell of the wood, using a wax-like substance. …
