VENICE -- City workers are creating a separate bike path and safe connection between the Venetian Waterway Trail and the city's bicycle loop near the city-owned Hamilton Building, which is being converted into the temporary Venice Public Library.

Cyclists accessing the trail through the Hamilton parking lot had been problematic before the city's purchase of the Hamilton Building last year. Once the city bought the building, it could fix the issues -- and the need to do so became more critical once Sarasota County decided in March to put the house the temporary library at the Hamilton.

City Engineer Kathleen Weeden said the goal was to separate the bicycle and pedestrian traffic from vehicle traffic.

The new path will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to travel along the south side of the Hamilton building and onto Nokomis Avenue, where they can then

link up with the rest of the city's bicycle loop. …
