HACKENSACK -- The City Council in a special meeting Monday introduced nearly $2.2 million in funding for renovations to the new performing arts center that have fallen behind schedule.

The renovation of the center, at 102 State St, initially was put out to bid with a budget of $1.5 million, but all of the bids opened on June 16 estimated a higher cost and were rejected by the council.

Citing a need to look more closely at the financing, the council pulled an item from the July 25 agenda that would have increased the appropriations to just less than $2.1 million, which included $220,000 raised by a gala co-hosted by the city and the Main Street Business Alliance in May.

At an 8 a.m. meeting Monday, the council voted unanimously to introduce $2,175,000 for the project, including that same $220,000. …
