Maher Installation Opens at Mattress Factory

An opening reception for "A Second Home," an installation by Dennis Maher, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mattress Factory, North Side. The work occupies three floors of the museum's 516 Sampsonia Way galleries.

Mr. Maher is an artist, architect and clinical assistant professor of architecture at University at Buffalo-SUNY. In recent years, he's explored processes of disassembly and reconstitution through drawing, photography, collage and constructions.

Readers may remember his room-sized installation "Planisphere" from the 2011 Biennial at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. I described it then as "a bombastic architectural deconstruction (re)built of lumber and other materials found in demolition sites within the city. A component of the artist's ongoing 'Undone-Redone City' project, the work calls to mind recycling but also devolution into chaos."

His awards include a 2010 New York State Council on the Arts Independent Projects Grant and a 2008 MacDowell Colony Fellowship. …
