Passaic Wins Grant to Hire 6 Firefighters

PASSAIC -- The city is expected to hire six firefighters with a $1.1 million grant provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Funding for the new hires comes through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant, known as SAFER. The grant program helps distressed cities maintain adequate staffing for emergency services.

"I am proud to help deliver these critical federal funds back to the city of Passaic," said Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., one of the prime authors of the legislation behind the SAFER program, which was signed into law in 2000. "Passaic will be better served by this funding and its residents will be better protected by the brave men and women of the fire services."

Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost said the department has lost eight firefighters to retirement during the last 18 months. …
