I am writing in response to the letter from Alan Stein ("Palestinians Have Blocked Peace with Israel," Aug. 6). Mr. Stein (who is not from Pittsburgh) asserts that the reason there has been no peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians is because the Palestinian leadership has walked away from Israeli peace proposals. This is a tired and false argument that Israelis like to repeat, as though they have played no role in that.

Back in 2000, then Prime Minister Ehud Barak condemned Yasser Arafat for turning down a deal too good to refuse. This deal would have left Palestinians with a "state" looking a great deal like the disconnected holes in Swiss cheese. How could Arafat not turn down this deal? Since then, continued Israeli settlement building has precluded any effort toward peace. …
