Chess Grandmaster from Shrewsbury Fined $300 for Paying 6-Year-Old Son to Drink Wine

SHREWSBURY * Andre Diamant, an elite chess grandmaster accused last year of paying his 6-year-old son to drink shots of wine with him at his home here, has pleaded guilty in the case and has been been fined $300.

Diamant, 26, was originally charged with misdemeanor child endangerment but pleaded guilty Wednesday to third-degree misdemeanor assault. St. Louis County Associate Circuit Judge John Borbonus III gave Diamant 30 days to pay the fine. Court records say Diamant also completed a parenting class and performed 40 hours of community service "as a show of good faith."

His son told police that in August 2015, his father gave him two $20 bills to drink "bad tea" and "good tea" from a shot glass, court records say. The "bad tea" made the boy vomit. The "good tea" did not.

The boy identified a bottle of sake, Japanese rice wine, as the "tea" he drank. …
