DEAR CAT: How can I convince my husband that the era of the silent man is dead and communication is the life's blood of a good relationship? He feels no obligation to share anything with me, including travel or health information, where he's going, etc. I've tried to have meaningful conversations on the importance of good communication, but he shrugs it off. Please advise.

DEAR TALKER: I doubt your husband considers the sharing of such info "meaningful," but that's why his silence is so disrespectful. Communi-cation is the heart of a marriage, right up there with love, sex and money. You might as well be living with a stranger.

Sometimes we need a little taste of our own medicine. If he's ignored your pleas, try giving him the silent treatment -- such as, "See you later, sweet pea. I'm going out." Then do it! That should get him talking (and pacing) by the time you get home.
