Bank protests erupt in East St. Louis, where black residents demand more jobs at the city's financial institutions. More than 200 protesters enter First National and chant "we shall not be removed." Police commandeer a Bi-State bus to haul them to jail.

READING WITH KIDS

St. Louis County Library will launch an early literacy initiative Aug. 15 called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. The program encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter school. Families can pick up a special reading log at all open county library branches. Stickers and prizes will be awarded as reading milestones are reached. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate, a free book and a bag with school supplies.
