Judging by her spirited barks, Charm, a border collie owned by Debbie Nauman, was duly impressed with the new Petco store in the Liberty Square shopping center, which is just off the Winfield exit of Interstate 64. Petco, a national chain of pet stores, had a "soft opening for its Liberty Square store on Monday, Aug. 8. A grand opening for the store, which is next to Aldi, is planned for Aug. 26-28.

Store Manager Rich Debar said Petco is a full-service pet store with a variety of products and services for pets of all kinds including fish, reptiles and other small animals.

"It ranges from aquatics to reptiles, and we have birds. We have small parakeets in this store, and medium-size birds in our Barboursville location, Debar said.

The Liberty Square Petco also has small reptiles, such as geckos and iguanas.

"We offer grooming for dogs and cats, and we also offer dog training, Debar said.

In the future, Petco will also offer vaccination clinics for pets.

"We haven't gotten into that yet in the West Virginia market, but we have a store opening in Parkersburg, hopefully next spring, and that will give us enough stores in West Virginia to add the Petco vaccination clinics, he said.

Currently in West Virginia, Petco has stores in Barboursville, South Charleston, and now, Liberty Square at Winfield.

Debar said he's excited about Petco's dog training classes, which are available for any breed or size dog. A well-trained dog is less likely to end up in a shelter or abandoned.

"The number one reason most dogs are euthanized or abandoned is from behavioral issues, Debar said.

For those needing pet supplies and accessories, Petco's shelves are lined with just about any product needed for pets.

"We have all kinds of (pet) toys and leashes, products for odor control -- anything you can think of for an animal.

Petco is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but the grooming department is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"A lot of people like to drop [their pets] off before they go to work and then pick them up at lunchtime.

Petco also has a groomer trained and certified to groom cats, Debar said. …
