Sanders Doesn't Advocate Destroying the System

In his Aug. 16 letter "This Election Is About Shaking Up the System," Blake McLaren, in apparent explanation of turning from a Bernie Sanders supporter to a Donald Trump supporter, concludes his letter by stating that "[i]n order to change a system, very rarely can you be successful if you become part of the system" and "once in a while some things need to 'Bern' in order to be properly rebuilt."

While I agree with much that was said, as someone who once joined a political system to change it, successfully, I strongly disagree with Mr. McLaren's premise as a basis for supporting Mr. Trump.

While buildings may be "burned" to rebuild them and sugar fields may be burned to replant them, systems - especially systems of governing - can only be "changed" by becoming part of or working through the system, especially when speaking of citizen-based systems such as ours. …
