Paul Elia, a Cliffside Park councilman for a quarter of a century and patriarch of a prominent football family, died Wednesday. He was 89.

Mr. Elia, a guard, was captain of the Cliffside Park High School football team in 1944 and played at New York University. His sons, Paul, Bruce and William, also played for Cliffside Park. Bruce made it to the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers in the late 1970s.

Bruce Elia, now in the real estate business, recalled registering two sacks for the 49ers at a game at Giants Stadium, with his father in the stands. "He was so happy," Bruce said, but added that his father, while proud to have a son in the NFL, "never made more of it than it was ... he believed more that you had to walk a straight line, be honest and do the right thing. …
