First Team Fizzles

Article excerpt

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Jets came into Friday night hoping to build some momentum after a solid preseason opener.

That hope was not realized in a 22-18 loss to the Redskins.

It was a tough night on just about every front for the first- teamers against Washington. Ryan Fitzpatrick (4-of-9 for 35 yards) led an ineffective offense. The defense looked sloppy.

And, worst of all, two key players left the field with injuries.

Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa exited in the first quarter with a head injury. And inside linebacker Erin Henderson departed with a shoulder injury in the second quarter.

Enunwa was the star of the Jets' first preseason game, a 17-13 win over the Jaguars on Aug. 11. He caught back-to-back passes for a total of 69 yards in that game.

But at FedEx Field, Enunwa was hurt before he could even catch a pass. Enunwa banged his head on the leg of Washington's Jamison Crowder while fielding a punt. He immediately grabbed his helmet with both hands and walked slowly off the field. Moments later he walked to the locker room, where he remained.

The offense struggled from there, but it wasn't all on Fitzpatrick -- despite his low completion percentage. The Jets' first team had only two first downs in three drives -- both on runs from Powell, who finished with three carries for 23 yards. And Fitzpatrick's longest pass was for 14 yards.

The defense was slightly better, but there were deficiencies in their two drives on the field.

Darrelle Revis made his preseason debut, and had an interception in the end zone to end a long opening drive by Washington. Leonard Williams had an impressive third-down sack to end another Redskins drive.

But playing without Muhammad Wilkerson -- who didn't dress as he continues to recover from a broken leg in January -- the first unit was inconsistent. …
