Weve never understood why white American evangelicals and fundamentalists are a wing of the Republican Party, because that party contradicts most values of Jesus. Christ championed underdogs and little people, not the privileged elite. Christ urged help for the poor, the sick, the hungry and others in need. Those values match the Democratic Party far more than the GOP.

Now a New York Times commentary by a world evangelical leader spotlights this strange contradiction. Deborah Fikes, a former executive of the World Evangelical Alliance and the National Association of Evangelicals, says such Christians in other nations hold political views opposite those of their U.S. brethren.

"Evangelicals in other countries do not consider a national healthcare system as a controversial issue and, in fact, see it as highly desirable," she wrote. …
