Matz Will Have Left Shoulder Examined

SAN FRANCISCO -- Steven Matz or Seth Lugo will start Thursday's game against the Cardinals, Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Matz flew to New York on Sunday night to be examined after experiencing left shoulder discomfort, and doctors will determine whether he has to be skipped again.

Lugo pitched well in Matz's place Friday night, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings in an 8-1 loss in his first career start. He has a 3.04 ERA in 23 2/3 innings.

"He's got a good arm,'' Collins said. "He's been in the rotation in the minor leagues. He's always tried to save it a little bit instead of overthrowing, breaking out that 96-[mph fastball] early. He knows he's got it when he needs it.

"He's done a very nice job here. Even though [the Giants] hit some balls pretty hard, he didn't shy away from the strike zone. That's impressive."

Collins could start Bartolo Colon on regular rest Thursday, but he's scheduled to face the Phillies when the team returns home Friday to begin a 10-game homestand. …
