IT'S a champion's selfie which says a thousand words.

This is Olympic gold medallist Kate Richardson-Walsh at her old club the Didsbury Greys - proving she will never forget the Manchester roots which catapulted her to the top.

The Stockport-born defender, 36, who was Team GB's flagbearer at Sunday night's Rio Olympics closing down ceremony, said she was 'incredibly proud to be chosen'.

And she's equally proud of her past, having studied at Priestnall School in Heaton Mersey.

She honed her hockey skills with the Didsbury Greys Ladies Hockey Club in the early 90s, following in the footsteps of mum Barbara.

In May, she paid her old club a visit - and posted this picture on Twitter. And the club hasn't forgotten her either.

Abi Dean, 28, a club member, said: "I think we are all inspired by Kate, she's an inspiration not only to the club but the whole town as well. …
