Mistrial Again Denied for Mother of Slain Child

A Common Pleas judge heard arguments Monday regarding closed discussions about newly discovered evidence that led to a request for a mistrial in a homicide case and while he again denied the motion for mistrial, he required attorneys for the prosecution and defense to make their arguments in open court.

Adriene Williams, 27, of Wilkinsburg, is accused of suffocating her 3-year-old daughter, Adrionna, in June 2015.

A woman walking her dog found the child's body in Swissvale, about 2 miles from the Wilkinsburg home where Ms. Williams' mother, Lucille Williams, was to have been babysitting. Adriene Williams' homicide trial started last week.

On Thursday, an Allegheny County homicide detective relayed information about a possible connection between the defendant's mother and a claim about a foster child who had died in New York.

Defense lawyers for Ms. Williams asked Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Anthony Mariani for a mistrial Friday. The motion for a mistrial and subsequent discussion were held out of earshot of the jury and the public. …
