A smoky, four-alarm fire tore through a set of Hazelwood row houses Wednesday afternoon, displacing eight people and injuring a firefighter.

The blaze was reported about 2:40 p.m. in the 5100 block of Lytle Street.

The fire started in the middle structure of a set of three row houses and spread to the other two, Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said. The fire quickly rose to four alarms because of the size of the structure.

A firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to UPMC Mercy in stable condition. Another firefighter was bitten by a dog but declined medical attention.

No residents were injured, but the row houses appeared to be a total loss. A neighboring home had some water damage.
