I READ with great sadness the demise of Tittertons Butchers in Princess Street Stockport (M.E.N., August 24).

I was born in Stockport and had a paper round all over Mersey Square. It was back in the early 70s and Stockport was a thriving business community, a town centre with a community feel - something you no longer get in town centres with all their multiple national stores making one shopping centre look like every other shopping centre across the country.

When I left school I worked in Robert Allen and Sons Butchers at the bottom of Hillgate we were surrounded by other independent traders and I still remember the faint smell from the fishmongers on Market Brew.

And wow what a great market. It was all hustle and bustle - the sort of place that would set a child's imagination into overdrive looking at all the exotic fruits and veg on Silcocks veg stall and imagining the far-flung places they had come from. …
