Motorcyclist dies in S.R. 70 crash

MANATEE COUNTY -- A motorcycle rider was killed in a crash early Tuesday that closed lanes of State Road 70 for several hours, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to the FHP, Russell Steven Omens, 65, of Bradenton was driving a Toyota Camry west on State Road 70 at about 5:50 a.m. Omens made a left turn onto 22nd Street Court East and traveled into the path of a Suzuki motorcycle driven east on S.R. 70 by Richard Thomas Sconyers, 26, of Bradenton, FHP says. The motorcycle struck the right side of the Camry.

Sconyers, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Omens, who was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, was charged with failing to yield to approaching traffic when making a left turn, according to the FHP report. …
