Paterson Apartment Fire Displaces 100

PATERSON -- A four-alarm blaze at a garden apartment complex injured two people and displaced about 100 residents Sunday evening, the fire chief said.

The fire began at the Carroll Street Apartments, an affordable housing complex, shortly before 7:30 p.m. The cause remains unknown, Chief Michael Postorino said.

Two people were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Postorino did not know the extent of their injuries.

By 9:30 p.m., the fire had been contained. No firefighters were injured.

The city was working Sunday night to get information about those who were displaced. People unable to stay with relatives will be helped by the American Red Cross, the chief said.

The blaze likely started in an apartment but quickly spread to a cockloft, Postorino said. He estimated 10 to 20 apartments were affected, but the scope of the damage remained unknown. …
