A man who appeared to be emotionally disturbed stole a Nutley police cruiser that was parked on Cathedral Avenue in Nutley on Friday morning and apparently crashed head on with an SUV near a Route 3 overpass in Clifton, according to a witness.

The police car and the SUV both appeared to have sustained heavy front-end damage and police taped off an area near the accident.

Authorities said the incident is being investigated by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. That office did not immediately respond to a request for information on Friday. Authorities provided no information about whether any injuries resulted from the crash.
