In his Aug. 21 Forum article "How Obamacare Has Boosted Health Care Costs," Dr. Paul Kempen tries to blame the Affordable Care Act and the government bureaucracy for the high cost of health care. I have no intention of challenging his numbers, which I hope are accurate. I would like to cite a personal experience with health care costs which may shed a different light on the subject.

Recently I had an emergency room visit with an overnight stay for observation in the hospital. The hospital billed almost $8,000 for its services. Fortunately, I am covered by original Medicare, which approved $2,000 of the charges. My 20 percent co-insurance amounted to about $400. Had Medicare not made the adjustments in charges, my out-of-pocket expenses would have been $1,600 - four times what I am paying. …
