BANKS is back for a new series, which we are promised will be grittier than ever. And they're clearly not kidding - someone gets their head smashed in with a hammer in the first five minutes.

The victim is found at the shrine of a teenager who committed suicide there six months earlier, and as the team start digging, it seems there could be a link.

Especially when they learn that her father has previous for beating up a drug dealer who was supplying to her and her teenage friends.

The murder also seems to be connected to crime lord Steve Richards, who is Banks' white whale, the one who got away.

He had him nailed for a double murder years before, but the jury came back with a shock verdict of innocent and Alan has always thought he got to them.

So this is more than just solving a murder - this is revenge that has been years in the making. …
