AVOCADO

There's no reason not to eat avocados. The green fruit (yes, it is a fruit) is, nutritionists will tell you, chock-full of nutrients - vitamins and minerals -- and, perhaps the best part, has fat that is actually not bad for you.

Dubbed "alligator pear" because it is shaped like a pear and its peel looks somewhat like alligator skin, the avocado is primarily made up of monounsaturated fat, which is the kind doctors applaud (some studies say it lowers cholesterol). Avocados are cholesterol- and sodium-free.

But that's hardly the reason food lovers devour avocados. They love its creamy, subtle taste. Which is why today you'll find its green flesh in sandwiches, salads, omelets, burgers, soups, even ice cream.
