County Open Space Aid to Help Cresskill Expand Playing Field

CRESSKILL -- The borough is moving forward with a project to expand space at Merritt Field by creating new playing areas and facilities between Piermont Road and Merritt Memorial Elementary School.

The Bergen County freeholders voted Aug. 10 to award $300,000 of open space money to Cresskill to help purchase land for the expansion.

Mayor Benedict Romeo said the borough planned to build a new Little League baseball field, playground, soccer field and snack bar on Piermont Road and renovate two of the existing softball fields behind Merritt School.

Using a $500,000 bond, the borough in November bought land at 222 Piermont Road, next to the existing Crestron Field Little League diamond, for $490,000 to expand the park.

The governing body plans to use the $300,000 from the county to pay off the bond, and will use borough open space money to pay off the remaining $190,000. …
