WINFIELD - Charleston Catholic was getting a Winfield team on Wednesday that had already suffered two losses in the team's first five games to start the year, seemingly pointing to some weaknesses in the Generals, who won four straight Class AAA state championships before invading Class AA-A this year. But Irish coach Amy Mullen had a more ominous feeling, and her intuition proved to be dead on.

Mullen feared that the early defeats would yield a much more focused, hungry Winfield team, and that's exactly what showed up as the Generals got on the board just 1:19 in, booted in two more first- half goals and rode a solid defensive effort to a 3-0 win over the Irish.

Catholic has won the past two Class AA-A crowns, and though the teams already played each other in seasons past, their coexistence in the same classification now brings a little more significance to their games. In a match that figures to develop into quite a Kanawha Valley rivalry, give round one to the Generals.

"Every time I come down here it's always tough. I don't think I've ever come out down here a winner, Mullen said. "And to give up a goal right away - we just weren't ready. We were scared, they came out on fire and I thought they might. They've had a couple of losses, they're used to not losing and I thought, Oh, they're coming out.' We haven't really had to play anybody tough and we just came out flat and weren't ready to play.

Freshman Peyton Frohnapfel got the party started with a goal right out of the gate for Winfield that seemed to set the tone. Claire Miller added a second tally with 16:04 remaining in the first half and Sydney Cavender got into the act just a few minutes later with 12:49 left off an assist from Carly Miller.

It was the Generals' first game against a Class AA-A foe, and there will only be two more with dates against Sissonville and Nitro. Winfield suffered matching 2-1 defeats to Cabell Midland and Washington, with victories coming against Brooke and Huntington.

The Generals are not used to early-season adversity, but coach Marshall Hoff is trying to spin it in a positive direction and his squad responded on Wednesday.
