Jets QB Petty Injured; Hackenberg Struggles

Article excerpt

PHILADELPHIA -- Bryce Petty should have been celebrating.

The young Jets' quarterback came into Thursday night fighting for his roster spot. And he had just thrown a perfect pass, the ball arcing from his fingertips into the hands of receiver Robby Anderson for a 44-yard touchdown.

But Petty didn't see any of that. He had been drilled on the play, and now he was slowly picking himself off the grass. In a few minutes, he'd be walking back to the locker room.

The Jets lost to the Eagles, 14-6, in Thursday's preseason finale at Lincoln Financial Field. And Petty suffered a right shoulder injury, robbing him of an extended opportunity to show why the team should keep him.

"It was [my] first start in an NFL game," Petty said. "And you [are scheduled to] get a half. I wanted to prove a lot, and that part got kind of cut short. But hopefully I've done enough [in the] preseason and we'll see what happens."

Petty wakes up this morning with much uncertainty, both physically and career-wise. Coach Todd Bowles called his injury a "sore" right shoulder. Petty, who wore a sling and ice over his shoulder, said X-rays on Thursday were clear. But he's scheduled for more tests, including an MRI, this morning.

The second-year quarterback out of Baylor was hurt on a huge, blindside hit from Philadelphia defensive end Bryan Braman. It came from the left side, and Petty's right shoulder was driven into the ground.

"Yeah, it was a good one," Petty said of the severity of the hit.

Petty's injury could impact the Jets' quarterback conundrum. With final roster cuts fewer than 48 hours away, they have to choose whether to keep four quarterbacks -- an unconventional move for most NFL teams.

Coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan both have said the team is willing to keep Ryan Fitzpatrick, backup Geno Smith and rookie Christian Hackenberg. …
